Do you know Serpa?
A jewel of the Alentejo Provence.....Do you know the amazing town of Serpa? It is set in the central east part of the Provence of Alentejo an easy 2 hours drive from central Algarve. Do not take the motorway or you will miss the very scenic agricultural lands. Miles and miles of cork, olive and sunflower plantations.
Approaching the city the
first sight is the Roman Aqueduct that brought water from the mighty
Guardiana River. Still enact century's old walls surround the entire
old city; walk around the walls and have spectacular views over the
Alentejo plains. Ancient churches and monuments are around every corner
of the very narrow old city's lane, too narrow even for a donkey cart.
Lunch in one of numerous Portuguese restaurants featuring the hearty Alentejo food and there delicious desserts, rarely found elsewhere. Usually the daily dish, served at lunch only, is plenty for two. Make this a part of your holiday, you'll see a beautiful and serene city that has preserved its heritage for untold centuries.
